Who We Are
High-quality, patient-centered care for every family.
A cherished member and valued leader of our community, Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown, passed away after her battle with cancer in November of 2021.
Dr. Garmon-Brown’s legacy is rich and celebrated; her work as a physician, volunteer, and medical missionary has changed lives. Charlotte Community Health Clinic is privileged to be a small part of this incredible legacy, as Dr. Garmon-Brown co-founded our practice as Charlotte’s first free clinic in 2000. Back then, we operated as a volunteer-led Free Clinic for uninsured adults and seniors in Charlotte. We have grown tremendously over the past two decades and transitioned to a Federally-Qualified Community Health Center in 2015, granting us the ability to reach more patients in need and expand our services.
We are here because of Dr. Garmon-Brown. It is an honor to participate in her legacy and carry on her vision of providing healthcare to those in need. Please take a moment to view this commemorative video below prepared by Novant Health:
Our Mission...
We improve the health of the community by providing the highest quality, patient-centered healthcare services for low-income and other underserved individuals.
Our Vision...
A healthy community where all individuals, regardless of their ability to pay, have access to comprehensive, coordinated, affordable, quality health care.
and Our Story
Since 2000, Charlotte Community Health Clinic has grown from a free clinic into a community health center that provides children and adults with medical, dental, and behavioral health services.
Ophelia Garmon-Brown, M.D., M.Div. and Nancy Hudson co-founded the clinic in 2000 alongside a group of committed volunteers. Nancy Hudson continued to lead the clinic up to and through its transition from a free clinic to a community health center. A lifelong healthcare leader and visionary, Dr. Garmon-Brown currently serves at senior vice president and chief community wellness and health equity executive for Novant Health.
Our Model
What are Community Health Centers?
Community Health Centers (also known as Federally Qualified Health Centers or FQHCs) are private, not-for-profit, community-based organizations that improve access to health care. They serve everyone, with a special focus on communities who often experience financial, language, cultural or other barriers to receiving care. Community Health Centers integrate medical, dental, behavioral health, and enabling services for all people, regardless of their ability to pay.
The Sliding Scale
Sliding scale programs allow all patients to access care at Community Health Centers. Uninsured or underinsured patients pay for services based on their income and family size. We believe that cost should never be the reason that a person does not receive the treatment they need. Learn more about payment options for your visit.
